In the Middle Ages, people had no way to protect their crops from hungry insects like the cockchafer beetle. In Avignon, France in the year 1320, three of these beetles were put on trial and ordered to banish their fellow insects to a specially designated area. As you might expect, the beetles did not do as they were told!
